They should also learn to ask why certain bets are promoted, what information is left out, and how companies profit from wagers." -- can ALSO equip students to better understand medical studies and wellness/health influencers.
I agree. I think there’s a good case that gambling literacy programs shouldn’t just learn from media literacy programs — as Isaac suggests — but also integrate as part of them.
The Maths-component is actually not as important as it initially seems. Gambling Literacy should, IMHO, be grounded more in Behaviour Economics and Everyday Psychology rather than fixating on one aspect; an aspect which could actually be more off-putting or disparaging to audiences - aversion of maths or pseudo-dyscalculia is in every social group imagable.
My perspective on this is taken from being a lifelong poker player, a gambling safety expert and a secondary-cycle teacher.
